Radicalization of Youth in Europe-Τhe Role of the PRAISE Project

Radicalization and extremist violence pose growing threats across Europe, particularly affecting young people, who are often more vulnerable to such ideologies. Schools play a crucial role in addressing these challenges, as they are key environments where youth socialize and form their values and beliefs. In consortium’s countries, Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Romania, and Sweden, but in all Europe as well, youth radicalization is a significant concern, with statistical data highlighting the urgent need for interventions.

In Greece, young people living in urban centers and areas marked by social and economic inequalities are more susceptible to radicalization. In schools, issues of social isolation and bullying have been linked to extremist tendencies. According to data from the European Network for the Prevention of Radicalization, 12% of students have expressed extremist views, while in certain areas, this percentage rises to 20%.

Cyprus faces similar challenges, with youth radicalization primarily associated with political and religious ideologies. Students in environments where tensions between different groups are high are more likely to engage in extremist behavior. A 2022 survey revealed that 10% of students had been exposed to radical ideas through the internet, while 6% had been involved in activities related to extremist groups.

In Italy, where there is a significant presence of migrant populations, there is an increased risk of radicalization in schools due to cultural diversification. Around 15% of students in urban areas reported witnessing hate speech, while 8% had contact with radical groups via social networks.

In Romania, youth radicalization is on the rise, particularly in rural areas where unemployment and poverty are prevalent. A 2021 study found that 18% of secondary school students had been influenced by radical ideas through social media. Social isolation and economic inequalities are considered key factors driving this trend.

In Sweden, one of the most developed countries in Europe, radicalization is primarily observed in areas with high immigration and cultural diversification. Research indicates that approximately 14% of students have been exposed to extremist ideas, while in certain regions, involvement in extremist groups reaches 7%.

In this context, the PRAISE project aims to contribute to the prevention of radicalization and extremist violence by focusing on the development of socio-ecological resilience skills among students. The project provides innovative educational tools designed to help students recognize and reject radical ideas while fostering critical thinking and conflict resolution. Through the creation of a digital e-learning platform and a digital board game, PRAISE empowers students to strengthen their skills in safe school environments. At the same time, teachers receive training to identify early signs of radicalization and foster a positive climate within their schools.

Through these interventions, PRAISE will significantly contribute to reducing the risk of student radicalization by creating a supportive framework that enhances social cohesion and inclusion. The project seeks to promote collaboration between schools and social services, while also enhancing the capacity of teachers and educational institutions to tackle this modern challenge.
