EDUCATE for INDEPENDENCE

Young people aged 15 to 29 with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities who are not engaged in education, employment, or training often face exclusion from the labor market and lack opportunities to lead independent, fulfilling lives. This is largely due to inflexible support systems that are not tailored to their specific needs. The Educate for Independence project introduces a new model of intervention focused on three main areas: reaching and engaging this often-overlooked group, developing individualized learning pathways, and facilitating their entry into the workforce. Drawing inspiration from IL RAMO’s experience with Local Educational Units, the project encourages collaboration with communities, promotes visibility in public spaces, redefines support relationships, and values social connections as key to empowerment.

Through the project, 250 NEETs will be actively supported to explore their capabilities and build greater autonomy. Out of these, 40 will participate in targeted training programs designed to develop essential life skills and prepare them for job opportunities through pilot and scaled-up initiatives. The project will also involve 80 professionals from social services, youth organizations, and local authorities, alongside 150 representatives from small and medium-sized businesses, fostering a network of allies to create more inclusive labor environments. This comprehensive and community-driven approach responds directly to the objectives of the Call by enhancing participation, skills recognition, and inclusive practices.

Impact

A total of 250 NEETs aged 15 to 29 with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities will be actively engaged in the project, with a strong focus on empowering them to recognize their capabilities and explore opportunities for greater independence. Of these, 40 participants will take part in a tailored training program aimed at strengthening life skills and preparing them for employment. This program is built around principles of community integration and supported by a structured skills validation system.

The project also seeks to transform the mindset of key actors—social workers, caregivers, local authorities, civil society organizations, youth groups, and SMEs—encouraging a shift from traditional welfare-based approaches to models that promote autonomy and active participation. Consortium partners will deepen their knowledge and competencies in supporting the transition of this vulnerable group into the labor market, strengthening their networks and collaboration with relevant stakeholders. Equipped with a refined validation methodology, partners are prepared to replicate the model and measure its impact. CSAC will also enhance its ability to detect and address early signs of social exclusion among this target group, helping to prevent school dropout, poverty, and long-term marginalization through coordinated, community-driven action.

Our Role

Innovation Hive will actively contribute to all project results and will lead two key work packages. As the coordinator of WP4 – Skills Validation and Activation in the Labour Market, Innovation Hive will be responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of the learning pathways, analyzing case studies to support the development of a practical toolkit, and raising awareness among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) about the inclusion of young people with intellectual disabilities in the workforce.

Additionally, Innovation Hive will lead WP5 – Mainstreaming and Dissemination, ensuring that the project’s outcomes, tools, and methodologies reach a wide audience. This includes engaging stakeholders at local, national, and European levels, and promoting the sustainable integration of the project’s results into existing structures and policies.
