SOCRATES

The project aims to strengthen meaningful child participation by developing, testing, and embedding a structured mechanism that enables children aged 6-12 to express their views and engage with decision-making processes that affect their lives. Responding to the persistent marginalisation or tokenistic inclusion of children’s voices, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds, the project introduces the SOCRATES Compass Mechanism, a circular, four-phase participatory model (Notice, Explore, Speak, Weigh) grounded in children’s rights, inclusivity, and evidence-based practice. The mechanism supports children in identifying issues, co-creating solutions, communicating with decision-makers, and reflecting on outcomes in a safe and age-appropriate way.

The project is implemented across six EU countries by a consortium of schools and child-focused organisations to pilot the SCM in both formal and non-formal education settings, supported by trained facilitators and educators. Local authorities and stakeholders are actively involved during the participation process to ensure that children’s inputs are acknowledged and can inform local governance and institutional practices.

Impact

The project strengthens meaningful child participation by moving beyond ad-hoc or symbolic consultation and introducing a structured, rights-based mechanism that enables children aged 6–12 to express views and see how these are taken into account. At individual level, children involved in the pilots gain confidence, communication skills, and a clearer understanding of their rights and role in democratic processes. Educators and facilitators increase their capacity to support safe, inclusive, and age-appropriate participation, embedding these practices within everyday educational and community settings .

Our Role

Innovation Hive leads the dissemination work package, including the communication strategy and project website, and ensures results reach educators, practitioners, and policy-relevant audiences. INNOHIVE also delivers the Final Impact Evaluation Report, analysing pre- and post-pilot data, and develops the online facilitator training course, supporting transferability and longer-term uptake of the SOCRATES Compass Mechanism beyond the project’s lifetime.
