ST3AM

ST3AM aims to address gender discrimination in EU STEM higher education, where women remain underrepresented despite progress. According to UNESCO’s 2023 report, only 28% of researchers are women, and this imbalance is largely due to discrimination rather than lack of skills. Education and gender equality are key components of the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and essential to achieving broader goals. In 2023, EU Commissioner Helena Dalli emphasized the need for women’s active participation to drive innovation and equality in STEM fields.
Initiatives like Women TechEU, which provided €3.8 million to 50 women-led tech startups, aim to close the gender gap and boost economic growth. Studies show that encouraging more women in STEM could increase EU GDP by 3% by 2050, generating up to €820 billion. Although women represent 48% of EU citizens with postsecondary education, only 25% of self-employed STEM professionals are women. Overall, ST3AM promotes female participation in STEM by fostering an inclusive, non-discriminatory environment, contributing to both gender equality and economic growth.

Impact

The aim of the ST3AM project is to promote gender inclusion and equality in STEM higher education by addressing gender disparities, particularly for female students and faculty members. It seeks to reform curricula and teaching methods to be more inclusive, cultivate gender-sensitive educational practices, and create a supportive academic environment that empowers women to pursue STEM careers. Through activities like Beta Classrooms, National Synergies, and mentorship initiatives, ST3AM aims to break down barriers and stereotypes in STEM, increase female participation, and influence systemic changes locally, regionally, nationally, and at the EU level. Ultimately, the project contributes to the development of a diverse and inclusive STEM workforce while aligning with broader EU gender equality and innovation goals.

Our Role

Innovation Hive plays a crucial role in the ST3AM project by leading the design, development, and finalization of the ST3AMspiration & Leadership Hub (WP4), a multifunctional digital platform that serves as a community space for sharing success stories and inspirational content from female STEM role models. Additionally, Innovation Hive is responsible for developing the project’s dissemination strategy (WP5), ensuring that ST3AM’s results reach a broad audience through clear, targeted communication. They also organize and coordinate the “Attain, Attract, and Access Girls in STEM” 3-day National Synergies event in Greece, aimed at promoting collaboration between educational institutions, industry, and the broader community to encourage gender equity in STEM fields.
