From Idea to Impact: How CODEDU Transformed Coding Education in Schools

The CODEDU project has delivered a series of impactful results that contribute directly to the digital transformation of education in Europe. One of the core outcomes is the Synthesis Report on Coding in Education, which maps the current state of coding instruction across six European countries. The report identifies key challenges, emerging trends, and best practices, providing a strong evidence base for designing effective teacher training and student learning experiences.

To address the skills gap, CODEDU developed a comprehensive training curriculum for teachers alongside a dedicated course for students. The teacher curriculum includes lesson plans, classroom activities, and methodological guidance to support the integration of coding and Arduino into everyday teaching. For students, the course provides a hands-on introduction to coding principles, logic, and robotics through practical applications using Arduino modules.

A major innovation of the project is the CODEDU gamified e-learning platform. This user-friendly platform offers an engaging virtual environment where students can simulate Arduino circuits and write code in a playful, game-based format. Teachers have access to all training materials, an online forum to exchange teaching methods, and a database of open-source coding examples. The platform also hosts interactive online workshops and will remain freely accessible in multiple languages for long-term use.

Supporting this ecosystem is the CODEDU Toolkit for Educators, a practical guide designed to help schools adopt the project’s methods. It includes adaptable resources, implementation tips, and tools that cater to different school contexts, ensuring that even schools with limited digital capacity can participate in the digital shift. The toolkit also emphasizes inclusion, accessibility, and the integration of critical thinking and creativity into coding education.

Throughout its implementation, CODEDU engaged over 190 teachers and students in co-creation, testing, and validation of the materials. Each country formed National Strategic Advisory Groups (NSAGs) with educators, coding experts, and policymakers who provided external feedback to ensure the project’s relevance and quality. Furthermore, each partner organized national multiplier events, reaching local stakeholders and promoting the project’s outcomes to a broader educational community.

Sustainability has been a central goal from the beginning. All results are offered as Open Educational Resources (OERs) and will remain accessible via the online platform for at least three years after the project’s end. Partners are committed to embedding the materials into their institutional programs and maintaining long-term support for educators. A structured dissemination and exploitation plan ensures that the project’s impact will extend well beyond its funding period.

In summary, CODEDU’s final deliverables include: the multilingual e-learning platform; the educational game with Arduino simulation; online Arduino workshops; training packages for teachers and students; the synthesis report; a practical toolkit; and a complete dissemination strategy. All these results contribute to strengthening digital skills, promoting innovative teaching, and supporting the EU’s efforts toward a digitally empowered education system.

CODEDU is more than just a project—it’s a bold step toward reimagining education for a digital age. By unlocking the world of coding and robotics for both students and teachers, we are not only building technical skills, but also nurturing curiosity, creativity, and confidence. With open tools, inclusive methods, and a passionate community of educators across Europe, CODEDU proves that innovation in schools is possible, accessible, and deeply impactful. As we look ahead, we invite every teacher, learner, and policymaker to join us in shaping classrooms where technology empowers imagination—and every student has the chance to become a creator of tomorrow.
