The Sustainable Urbanism Digital Guidebook serves as the foundation and primary product of the Erasmus+ Contribute Project. Its main objectives are to examine current policies and strategies for reusing abandoned spaces in partner countries, share and gather best practices on environmental and sustainable urban actions, and increase awareness and knowledge of urban regeneration design. It also aims to promote Sustainable Urbanism while recognizing the SDGs, particularly SDG11, as essential for creating more habitable, sustainable, and inclusive communities. These objectives align with the project’s goal of enhancing understanding and practices related to reusing abandoned structures and areas for urban regeneration.
The Sustainable Urbanism Digital Guidebook compiles desk research findings from Greece, Austria, Turkey, Spain, and Belgium, providing a detailed exploration of the policies and strategies employed for reusing abandoned spaces. The guidebook’s comprehensive approach ensures that it is a practical tool for urban planners, policymakers, and community leaders. According to the findings, Austria, innovative urban regeneration has transformed abandoned areas into urban gardens, while Greece emphasizes citizen participation and youth engagement to create inclusive environments. Turkey focuses on empowering youth for sustainable urban regeneration, aligning with SDG11. Spain highlights community-oriented urban gardening initiatives, and Belgium demonstrates holistic urban planning through sustainable transport, energy investments, and a balance between heritage preservation and modern development.
The Sustainable Urbanism Digital Guidebook is a result of collective efforts and shared knowledge in addressing urban development challenges, that offers a roadmap for creating sustainable and inclusive urban environments. Its creation reflects a growing recognition of the potential for sustainable and community-driven solutions to urban development challenges. By fostering citizen participation, community engagement, and sustainability, the guidebook is the way to transform abandoned spaces into green urban areas, contributing to a more sustainable future for European cities.
