Language learning: a multilateral skill

Nowadays, if someone wants to be successful in their career, it is important to learn how to take advantage of the free time and use it to acquire a new skill. It has been proven that people who are willing to learn something new every day, whether it’s foreign cultures or learning a second language, are always accomplished.

Multilingualism is a common feature of our world and making new connections is more valuable than ever. Since the evolution of technology, the world seems to be getting even smaller and people from different cultures are now able to communicate and collaborate easily with each other. Therefore, knowing a second language can provide an unfair advantage.

A second language may transform your career. Living in an interconnected world means that more and more jobs are advertising jobs where understanding more than one language is required. Employees are frequently requested to travel for business, to strengthen these contacts, or to be relocated abroad as more organizations trade worldwide and develop relationships with other nations.

Aside from increasing your chances of finding a decent job or succeeding in your profession, learning a second language may also provide you with insight into various cultures. As a result, learners will be better equipped and confident to explore the world and learn about other people’s cultures.

For most countries, a lack of integration is a serious issue. The majority of the time, this is due to a linguistic barrier. The most common example is when people living to a foreign country become isolated, as they only associate with people speaking their native language. Thus, learning a second language allows us to become a part of a community and prospect within different culture while also learning more about the rest of the world.

Another not so obvious fact about language learning is that bilingualism can also increase language literacy in the mother language, as it helps to practice vocabulary and grammar during the learning process. In addition, learning a new language with similar roots can help in learning other languages, such as Italian and Spanish.

Finally, the brain’s functions increase when it is engaged in learning new skills. Learning a new language forces the brain to become familiar with new grammatical and lexical norms. It trains the memory to recall new words, make connections between them and apply them in context. The benefits of knowing a foreign language range from advancing your career to improving your brain function and much more. In this context, a European-funded project “Learning Foreign Language Online” has been created to provide and support learners across the Union to learn a new language for free. On the project’s website  users can find a collection of free educational resources as well as an online course to support the learning process!
